A Simple Day on Vancouver Island
We recently spent the day at Coastal Black Estate Winery during their spring tulip festival, and it turned out to be one of those easy, well-paced experiences that is worth sharing.
This was our second time visiting. We first came in the fall for their pumpkin patch, and it has become a place we look forward to returning to.
Why Timing Matters

For this visit, we chose a weekday just after opening weekend.
That decision made a noticeable difference. The space felt calm, open, and easy to move through, which allowed us to take our time and enjoy everything without feeling rushed.
If you are looking for a quieter experience, weekday visits are well worth it.

The Tulip Fields
The tulips are the main draw in the spring season.
Rows of colour stretch across the property, creating a space that feels vibrant but still relaxed. It is easy to move through at your own pace, stop for photos, or simply take it all in.
There is a natural flow to the layout that makes the experience feel easy rather than overwhelming.
A Thoughtful Farm Experience
Beyond the tulips, there is a mix of small details that make the space feel complete.

Animals are located in well-maintained pens throughout the property, including goats, pigs, pheasants, and peacocks. The baby animals, especially the goats and the piglet, Soda Pop, were a highlight.
The mini Highland cows, including Strawberry Shortcake and Apple Cider, are another standout and something that makes this visit feel a little more unique.
There are also simple activities throughout the space:
A jumping pad
A hay maze
Giant bubbles
A forested play area with a slide and small playhouses
Games like duck races, connect four, and cornhole
One unexpected feature was the potato cannon, which added a fun and memorable element to the day. Food, Drinks, and a Small Favorite.
Near the entrance, there is a seating area where you can take a break and enjoy food and drinks. They offer pizza, mini donuts, slushies, and beverages, including their own wines and mead. One small detail that stood out for us was the mead. It is something we had tried on a previous visit, and it has quietly become something we look forward to. I brought home an original and a blackberry version this time, and it is likely something we will continue to pick up when we return in the fall.
A Light Touch of Their Story
What makes this space feel different is the sense of history behind it.
Coastal Black is a multi-generational farm that has evolved over time, shifting from traditional farming into a mix of agriculture and seasonal experiences. That background adds a layer of intention to what they have created today.
A Nod to Community and Markets
On busier days and weekends, the space naturally expands into more of a market-style environment. From a small business perspective, it is always interesting to see how spaces like this support local makers and bring people together. It is something I find myself paying attention to, and it is easy to see how these environments are thoughtfully put together.
There is a strong connection between agriculture, community, and small business here.
Final Thoughts
This visit felt simple in the best way.
A calm, well-paced day with space to move, explore, and enjoy what is around you. It is the kind of place that allows you to slow down without needing to try too hard.
We are so fortunate to have spaces like this on Vancouver Island, and it is a good reminder to take the time to explore what is close to home.
If you are planning a visit, a weekday is highly recommended.
